We’ve had a lot of updates for social media platforms this June, from new features to monetisation opportunities.

Here’s the latest updates in the world of social media this month….

Instagram Tests AI Chatbot in DMs

Meta are currently experimenting with using AI, and over on Instagram they have introduced a new AI chatbot. This works similarly to Snapchats ‘My AI’, where users can ask questions and get instant responses. By @’ing the AI in your DMs, you can incorporate the feature into discussions.

Mark Zuckerberg spoke of Meta’s current decision to focus on developing AI features: “In the short term, we’ll focus on building creative and expressive tools. Over the longer term, we’ll focus on developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways. We’re exploring experiences with text, with images, and with video and multi-modal experiences.”
LinkedIn Company Page DMs

LinkedIn is planning to introduce the ability for company pages to send and receive DM’s, and have been slowly testing it with selected users before rolling it out in full. It will allow members to have a direct connection to a company, and company pages will have a dedicated inbox where these types of messages will be received. However, companies will have the option to turn off the messaging feature if they wish.

They’re also working on an ‘AI Assistant’, which can only develop the interactions members have with companies on the platform further.

YouTube Shorts Promotional Opportunities

YouTube have launched a new promotional opportunity called #ShortsFriends, where creators can link together to boost their reach and engagement on the platform. If you’re accepted Into YouTube’s Shorts Community, then you’ll have access to a wide range of creators that you can partner with to cross-promote content and improve the performance of your shorts.

Monetisation Requirements Changed On YouTube

Also on YouTube, the monetisation threshold has been altered in order to attract new talent and boost engagement for new creators, especially as they see TikTok and Twitch stars take advantage of using YouTube alongside other platforms. The new threshold allows creators to join the YouTube Partner Program earlier, and whilst the ad revenue will still only apply if they meet previous requirements, joining the program will give them access to more tools and a bigger audience that allows them to boost their following.

YouTube has stated the following: “Eligible creators will begin to be able to apply to YPP earlier - once they’ve met a threshold of 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3000 watch hours in the past year or 3M Shorts views in the last 90 days. These new partners will unlock access to fan funding features like channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and the ability to promote their own products with YouTube Shopping.”

New Tools For Creators Using Facebook

There has been a number of new updates introduced to Meta’s social platforms.

On Facebook, an ‘Inspiration Hub’ for Reels will be introduced to help creators find what’s popular and attracting the most engagement, as well as making reel templates easier to access.

Reels will also be easier to edit, as text, music and audio will be now ‘stacked’ when editing, making it simpler to change their position and when they appear during the reel.

The professional dashboard will be updated so it incorporates Reels data - including reach, engagement, new followers from Reels, and retention graphs.
Professional accounts will also be giving a daily checklist, helping users to see what they could do to increase their Facebook presence and improve their marketing. A ‘Follow’ button will also appear next to names when professional accounts comment on posts, making it even easier for users to follow creators and businesses they’re interested in.

Branded Instagram Reels and Stories can now be cross-promoted to Facebook, increasing monetisation opportunities and encouraging Instagram creators to also utilise the benefits of Facebook marketing too.

Instagram Broadcast Channels Expanded Worldwide

Instagram have rolled out its broadcast channel feature to all creator accounts. These channels allow creators to give updates to fans using text, images and polls, as well as answer any question prompts submitted by members of the broadcast channel.

With more Instagram users engaging with each other using private messages, broadcast channels allow creators to take advantage of marketing via private messaging. Moderators can also be added to channels, to ensure information can be kept up to date, that notifications are acknowledged, and that members are utilising the channel correctly.

25K Character Tweets For Twitter Blue Users

The character limit has once again increased for Twitter Blue subscribers, now expanding to 25,000. They have also added the opportunity to include images between text, making longer tweets appear more like blog or article style content rather than a long piece of text with an image at the bottom, or with tweets split into threads.

TikTok ‘Now’ Discontinued

After introducing TikTok ‘Now’ in 2022 due to the success of BeReal, TikTok have announced that the feature will be discontinued in-app.

The separate app, which was released in some markets, will continue, and those who used the feature in-app will still be able to keep all of their memories when the feature disappears.

That’s all the latest news from June! Stay tuned over the next month for any changes that happening in the world of social media & digital marketing as we reach the height of Summer.

Finally, your social media tip is: Wanting your business to be in peoples minds when they need it but not posting about it doesnt make sense. Expecting results from your marketing but only "turning up" on social media ad hoc or when you have a spare moment doesnt make sense.

To be rewarded you need to show up every day. Success comes from consistent effort, whether that's marketing or any other part of your business. Consistent effort every day. Posting in that group, posting on your page, showing you’re the expert and you have value. So if you haven't already it's time to start "showing up".
