There’s been quite a few new updates in the world of social media this March, so let’s take a look at what changes and new features have been introduced!

YouTube Shorts Update

YouTube has announced that creators of Shorts can now directly respond to comments using a Short – much like the feature on TikTok, allowing the same thing.

Therefore, instead of replying with text, users can keep the content chain flowing by responding via a Short instead.

YouTube will also be rolling out ‘data stories’, which have analytics suggestions for community posts, offering deeper insight into their performance.
Messenger Features

Messenger will now allow creators to send updates, polls and engagement methods directly to their followers using Facebook and Instagram.

These are known as ‘broadcast channels’, which Meta have started to roll out recently. They said in their announcement: “Creators can use broadcast channels as a casual, quick way to keep followers up-to-date. They can use text, photo, video and voice notes to share their latest updates and behind-the-scenes moments and even create polls to crowdsource fan feedback. Only creators can send messages, while followers can react to content and vote in polls.”

Tom Allison, head of Facebook, said: “Over the coming year, we’ll build more ways to integrate messaging features in Facebook. Ultimately, we want it to be easy and convenient for people to connect and share, whether in the Messenger app or directly within Facebook”.

This is a good sign for brands and creators looking to create a deeper connection with their audience, as they’ll be able to have that direct link to them, as well as keep them in the loop constantly with new business updates.

Longer TikTok Content

TikTok is launching ‘Series’, a feature which allows creators to upload up to 80, 20-minute-long videos that are behind a ‘pay per view’ wall, which will have its price set by the creator.

This will help users earn money beyond the Creator Fund, and see TikTok start to compete with other apps such as YouTube and Patreon.

Update To Facebook Reels

Facebook Reels have had some new updates, including allowing longer videos, the ability to integrate memories, and templates for trending Reel formats.
Reels now can be 90 seconds longer – an increase of 30 seconds on the previous limit.

Memories can now also be shared as a Reel, which can help to boost the use and engagement of Reels in general.

Meta are also adding what they call ‘Grooves’, which automatically aligns your video with the beat of the music, meaning you won’t have to worry about doing it manually yourself.

Reels will also introduce the ‘template’ feature which is already available on Instagram, allowing you to create content using the current trends.

LinkedIn Introducing AI

LinkedIn are currently rolling out AI for ‘collaborative articles’. LinkedIn editor in chief and VP Daniel Roth said: “We are introducing collaborative articles — knowledge topics published by LinkedIn with insights and perspectives added by the LinkedIn community. These articles begin as AI-powered conversation starters, developed with our editorial team. Then, using LinkedIn’s Skills Graph, we match each article with relevant member experts who can contribute their lessons, anecdotes, and advice based on their professional experience.”

Those who contribute to the articles will gain a badge that signifies their contributions, helping writers with a smaller network gain more reach and exposure.

Well, there you have it! The latest social media updates for March 2023. Have a great April and remember to keep an eye out for more changes happening to social media platforms in the next month.

Finally, your social media tip for March is: Visibility is key to your marketing. People need to see you and your business. The more you're seen the more you are remembered – add value, show your expertise, help people both in your posts and with your comments on other people's posts. The more you are seen with quality posts the more you are remembered and ultimately the more enquiries you will get.
